FINALLY!!! The Time Has Come!
This Memorial Day, Monday, May 25
10:30am - 1:00pm
Burlington ICE Facility
We have heard from the leaders of the groups protesting in Burlington and they have a time for us to come down - on Memorial Day!
DAY OF THE CRANE Update:
Protests at Burlington are in front of the Burlington ICE facility, which is in an office park. Both ICE and the office park owners have been pretty persnickety about what one can and cannot bring to the protests outside the facility. We are not allowed to leave anything on the site, which had been our intention in the past. We hope to form a small procession, and carry our origami cranes - that all of you, and others, have made at our workshops - and come under a large tree which is in front of the ICE facility. There we can speak, maybe have some music. Leah from Project Tsuru will be there to speak as well. (Project Tsuru is the group we highlighted in the past who are Japanese American survivors of the detention camps of World War II, along with their families, friends, and allies.) All in all, a great, peaceful way to protest and support, using our Origami Art in Action! An action of Creative Resistance at its best. I am so proud of all of us for supporting this endeavor, participating at workshops, and adding to this great experience.

Project Tsuru" most commonly refers to Tsuru for Solidarity, a Japanese-American social justice movement opposing detention sites and advocating for human rights, drawing on the historical injustice of WWII Japanese American incarceration.
Mission: To end the U.S. government's use of concentration camps for immigrants and refugees through non-violent direct action, education, and advocacy.
Origin: Founded in 2018 by Japanese-American WWII camp survivors, their descendants, and allies who were alarmed by the conditions in modern detention centers.
Activities: Organizing protests, building solidarity with other communities of color, and holding healing circles to address
intergenerational trauma.
Symbolism: The organization uses origami cranes (tsuru) to symbolize peace and healing, and the number of cranes often represents the number of people detained.
Salem's Call Action: Inspired by Project Tsuru, we have started Origami in Action: Birds for Peace and Compassion. We are going to deliver origami birds to the detention center closest to us on President's Day, February 16, 22025. We invite you to do the same in your area.
We support this effort by holding multiple workshops, in person, and on Zoom. For further info on our Action, or to register for a workshop, visit us at www.salemscall.com/news.
