Origami, the art of shaping and folding paper, began in China after paper was invented around 105 AD, and later brought to Japan by monks in the 6th century. Initially a ceremonial practice for the elite, it evolved into a recreational art form during the 1600's, as it continues to do today.
Our Action in January & February:
In the next month, we will be getting together, in person and on Zoom, to simply do origami, the ancient art of folding paper. We hope to create as many origami birds as possible. Long considered a symbol of peace and hope, we plan to come together and deliver them to the nearest ICE detention center, in Burlington, MA., on President's Day, Monday, February 16, at 11 am.
This action is inspired by the group Tsuru for Solidarity, a group of Japanese Americans who were interred in the concentration camps of World War II, as well as their family, friends, and allies. Established in 2018, among other actions, they had left origami cranes at detention centers in the US in opposition to concentration camps existing anywhere in our country, as well as the human rights violations occurring within.. Their motto: " Never again is now."
Join us as we learn the basics of origami, and learn some easy origami projects. We will learn the basics of creating origami cranes to use in a a protest art project in February.
This is a free workshop. Feel free to attend one, or more sessions. Space is limited, sign up using the link below. Hope we see you there, at 61 Barstow St/ Deborah & Meara’s house, or on Zoom.
